Finances are tight for everybody, and one of the easiest ways to cut cost is to cut your summer vacation, but you don’t have to!

There are ways to afford that summer vacation you’ve been thinking about all year long. Travel journalist and expert Laura Powell has a few suggestions that are easy to incorporate into your travel plans.

1. Deals
Airfare discounts
Hotels offering perks- free breakfast and parking, discount tickets
Search websites for coupons
Research and plan

2. Travel Like A Celebrity
Faster airport security checkpoints
Higher chance of empty seats on planes
Faster luggage return
Better on-time performance
Shorter lines

3. The Family Road Trip
The cheapest way to travel
Lowered gas prices make it a great time to drive
Check your state’s tourism website, and the tourism websites of neighboring states for ideas

4. Tips to Save
Use local agencies when renting a vacation home or condo
Travel light to save on checked bag fees
Ride with family or use airport shuttles
Use credit card reward points toward travel costs
It’s a buyer’s market so negotiate!
